Course objectives
The course gives an introduction to health care ethics, focusing on ethical and philosophical problems of intensive care. The aim of the course is: to introduce to intensive care ethics; to inform about ethical dilemmas in health care professions; to learn how to solve ethical problems in health care, including argumentation; to develop the ability to perceive ethical questions within intensive care - to learn how to prevent problems observing ethical professional standards.

  • 1. Introduction to health care ethics. 2. Models of relationships within health care (and their development). 3. Informed consent. 4. Patient rights. 5. Medical information treatment. 6. Personal data protection in health care. 7. Human dignity in intensive care. 8. Autonomy and decision making in intensive care. 9. Advance directives, living will. 10. Ethics in care for dying persons. 11. Euthanasia and assisted suicide. 12. Palliative care. 13. Human subject research. 14. Human biological material used for research. 15. Ethics and law (Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine, Declaration on Human Rights and Bioethics).
