Course objectives
After completion of the course student: understands elementary cellular processes; comprehends the complexity of intercellular communication and mutual regulation of individual cells in a multicellular organism; is able to explain the difference between healthy and pathologically-working cell; is able to express basic coherence between malfunction in cellular processes and development of diseases, especially hereditary diseases, cancers or developmental defects. Student is also able to apply this knowledge and skills in following courses.

  • Week 3: From a gene to protein – expression of genetic information
  • Week 4: Cell architecture and functions of eukaryotic cells
  • Week 5: Cytoskeletal system in cells
  • Week 6: Bacteria and viruses
  • Week 7: Mitosis and cytokinesis, meiosis
  • Week 8: Cytoskeleton. Molecular motors
  • Week 9: Cell division and cell cycle control, apoptosis
  • Week 10: Principles of heredity I
  • Week 11: Principles of heredity II
  • Week 12: Stem cells and their applications in medicine
  • Week 13: Malignant transformation of cells, cancer

Teaching methods
two-hour lecture per week
Assessment methods
TThe course is completed with a written examination test with 60 questions (30 multiple choice questions, where negative marking applies for incorrect answers + 30 questions where the student chooses from true/false). The exam requires knowledge discussed at the lectures. The exam tests the understanding of the discussed knowledge.
Succesfull passing of the subject's practice is required for attending the exam.
