Course objectives
The main objectives of the course are:
- understanding the chemical composition, structure and properties of the main cellular components
- understanding the basic processes in the cell; and understanding the principles of pathology of these processes in cancer and genetic diseases
- understanding the basic principles of heredity
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to:
- describe the composition, structure and functions of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
- Explain the principles of intercellular communication and cell differentiation
- Explain the principles of regulation and purpose of cell division (mitosis and meiosis)
- explain basic principles of heredity and nature of human genetic diseases, describe basic methods of gene diagnostics
- Explain the principles of tumour transformation

  • Week 1: Introduction. Biopolymers I - proteins
  • Week 2: Biopolymers II - nucleic acids and DNA replication
  • Week 3: From a gene to protein – expression of genetic information
  • Week 4: Cell architecture and functions of eukaryotic cells
  • Week 5: Cytoskeletal system in cells
  • Week 6: Cell communication, cell differentiation. Stem cells
  • Week 7: Mitosis and meiosis
  • Week 8: Cell division and cell cycle control, apoptosis
  • Week 9: Principles of heredity I
  • Week 10: Principles of heredity II
  • Week 11: Methods of genome studying. Gene diagnostics
  • Week 12: Bacteria and viruses
  • Week 13: Malignant transformation of cells, cancer
  • Week 14: substitution lecture

Teaching methods
two-hour lecture with discussion per week
Assessment methods
TThe course is completed with a written examination test with 60 questions (30 multiple choice questions, where negative marking applies for incorrect answers + 30 questions where the student chooses from true/false). The exam requires knowledge discussed at the lectures and practices. The exam tests the understanding of the discussed knowledge.
Succesfull passing of the subject's practice is required for attending the exam.
