Knowledge of geometric optics and the basics of the optics of spherical refractive errors of the eye. - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is only offered to the students of the study fields the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- Optics and Optometry (programme LF, B-OPOP)
- Optics and Optometry (programme LF, B-SZ)
- Optometry (programme LF, B-SZ)
- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to teach students to understand and optically describe the accommodation of the eye and derive the optimal parameters of spectacle lenses for the correction of spherical refractive errors of the eye, astigmatism, and presbyopia.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will:
- understand the optical nature of eye accommodation, the nature and correction of presbyopia
- be able to calculate and mutually recalculate the structural and optical parameters of the spectacle lens based on the correction value
- understand the fundamentals and optical method of optimizing the values of peripheral astigmatism and the field curvature of the spectacle lens
- understand the prismatic effect of the optical prism and lens, the optical design of bifocal and multifocal spectacle lenses, the method of determining intervals of sharp vision
- understand the optical principles of using aspherical surfaces
- understand the method of axial (eye) astigmatism correction and the method of recalculating the notation of this correction - Syllabus
- 1. Accommodation (basic concepts, mechanism of accommodation, Purkynje images, change of Gullstrand's eye parameters during accommodation, accommodation measurement, dependence on age: Duane graph, optical analysis of the accommodation process: Graeff factor, position of the near point with ametropia correction)
- 2. Presbyopia and its correction (nature of the defect, technical possibilities of correction, correction for an emmetropic eye, choice of addition, correction for an ametropic eye, intervals of sharp vision)
- 3. Spectacle lenses (basic forms of lenses with spherical surfaces, calculation of powers and surface radii based on specified lens parameters)
- 4. Spectacle lens aberrations (basic overview, field curvature, Petzval-Coddington condition, effect of field curvature at eye rotation, tangential and sagittal plane, peripheral astigmatism, its correction: condition of zero peripheral astigmatism, Tscherning ellipse, point-focus lenses, correction for thick lenses, other philosophies of lens design, modern designs, aspherical surfaces, optical properties of materials for spectacle lenses)
- 5. Bifocal and multifocal lenses (prismatic effect of optical prism and lens, effect of lens decentration, bifocal lenses, requirements for their design, elimination of image jump at the interface, sharp vision intervals, trifocal lenses, lenses with progressive addition)
- 6. Eye astigmatism and its correction (etiology and classification of astigmatism, correction of eye astigmatism, cylindrical and toric spectacle lenses, principles of recalculation of astigmatic combinations)
