Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to read, translate and summarize specialist texts in English, communicate in English in both academic and everyday situations, learn and use technical terminology in English. In particular, students should be able to describe and explain terms related to common laboratory work, name laboratory equipment and define its functions, describe individual steps of laboratory procedures, apply professional language in communication with doctors and colleagues, interpret laboratory reports; use grammatical structures typical of medical language.
Syllabus
  • MEDICAL ENGLISH. Syllabus.
  • 1st week: UNIT 9: Flow cytometry. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Grammar: Past Perfect Tense Simple and Progressive.
  • 2nd week: UNIT 9: Flow cytometry. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Relative Pronouns. Relative Clauses.
  • 3rd week: UNIT 10: Microparticle enzyme immunoassay (MEIA). Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Grammar: Subject/Object + Infinitive Constructions.
  • 4th week: UNIT 10: Microparticle enzyme immunoassay (MEIA). Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Passive Voice.
  • 5th week: UNIT 11: Medical laboratories - Particular requirements for quality and competence. European standard ISO 15189:2003. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Grammar: Temporal Clauses.
  • 6th week: UNIT 11: Medical laboratories - Particular requirements for quality and competence. European standard ISO 15189:2003. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Indefinite Pronouns.
  • 7th week: UNIT 12: Safety in clinical laboratory. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Grammar: Present and Past Conditionals.
  • 8th week: UNIT 12: Safety in clinical laboratory. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Adverbial Clauses of Condition.
  • 9th week: UNIT 13: Microbiology - Gram stain. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Grammar: Gerunds after Nouns, Adjectives, Verbs, and Prepositions.
  • 10th week: UNIT 13: Microbiology - Gram stain. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Sequence of Tenses.
  • 11th week: UNIT 14: Laboratory automation. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises.Grammar: Indirect Questions.
  • 12th week: UNIT 14: Laboratory automation. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Exceptions to Sequence of Tenses.
  • 13th week: UNIT 15: Quality control in the laboratory. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Grammar: Adverbial Clauses of Purpose.
  • 14th week: UNIT 15: Quality control in the laboratory. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Numbers/Numerals.
  • 15th week: Revision of the subject-matter, preparation for the examination.

Assessment methods
The above mentioned topics will be consolidated using all the study skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Supplementary materials used in the seminars (hard copies, electronic documents etc.) will be provided by the lecturer. The course takes the form of seminars. Attendance is compulsory. Two absences are tolerated provided a letter of excuse is handed in at the Office of Studies. Assessment is based on the results of the final examination (testing the knowledge from the autumn and spring semesters) and attendance. The examination consists of two parts, written and oral. The prerequisite for the written part is a presentation on a medical topic during the semester. The prerequisite of the oral part is to reach a minimal score of 65 per cent in the written part of the examination.

Information on completion of the course: Studenti se státní jazykovou zkouškou, příp. jejím ekvivalentem (TOEFL, FCE apod.) mohou vykonat zkoušku kdykoliv během semestru.
