Course objectives
After completing the course the students will be able to use formally correct terminology belonging to the valid Pharmacopoea. They will be familiar with prescription writing and drug dosage forms. Students should be able to understand principles of "pharmacological thinking" for choosing a drug. They will know routes of administratin, basics of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and adverse effects.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course the student will be able:
- to use formally correct terminology belonging to the valid Pharmacopoea. - to prescribe ready-made drug dosage forms.
- to understand basic principles of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, routes of admninistration and adverse effects.

  • INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF PHARMACOLOGY - PUBLIC HOLIDAY - THE LESSON WILL BE SUBSTITUTED
  • Contents of the study of Pharmacology, contents and organization of theoretical and practical courses and lectures, required and recommended textbooks. The conditions for granting the credit. Pharmacology - drug nomenclature. Introduction to the prescription terminology. Classification of drug preparations, ATC groups. International Pharmacopoeia, Pharmacopoeia Bohemica.

  • Semi-solid drug dosage forms Prescription of selected drug forms (ointments, creams, pastes, gels and other preparations for application to the skin and mucous membranes).
  • Fluid drug dosage forms Prescription of selected drug forms (fluid drug dosage forms - solutions for rubbing, compresses and lavages, solutions and drops for oral administration).

Teaching methods
The teaching process includes theoretical setting up as well as practical training of knowledge and skills stated in Syllabus. Included are also individual work with specific pharmacological softwares and homework on the selected topics, presented and discussed afterward in class.
Assessment methods
Participation in practicals is obligatory and registered. To get credits a student has to pass 2 written tests: 1) on drug prescription + translation of selected prescription expressions into Latin (assessed individually by the teacher), 2) the multiple-choice test on knowledge of topics taught. 60 percents of correctly answered questions are required.

Teaching takes place on the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, UKB, Kamenice 5, pavilion A19.

Teaching takes place in two semesters, in the form of lectures and seminars, participation in practical exercises is obligatory and registered.

Practical lessons in the Spring semester 2023:

May 9-12, 2023 (9.00-11.30) May 15-19, 2023 (9.00-11.30)

When repeating the subject is necessary to pass the tuition in full within the specified range.

Termination in the Spring semester: credit. Requirements for obtaining credit - see above.
