Abstract
The aim of the course Fundamentals of Diagnostics of Functional Disorders of the Musculoskeletal System I is to provide students with theoretical foundations in the diagnostics of functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system and in therapy according to the concept of Professor Lewit. The course focuses on acquiring theoretical knowledge of functional pathology and the differential diagnosis of functional disorders of soft tissues. Lectures cover topics such as an introduction to the course and the issue of functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system, movement control in relation to these disorders, pain, theoretical aspects of functional disorders of soft tissues (skin, subcutaneous tissue, fascia, muscles, periosteum), and the basics of differential diagnosis of functional disorders of the soft tissues of the musculoskeletal system.
Learning outcomes

After completing the theoretical part of the course, the student:

  • masters the theoretical foundations of diagnostics and therapy of functional disorders of the soft tissues of the musculoskeletal system according to Lewit
  • understands the theoretical foundations of motor control in relation to functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system, including the origin and role of pain
  • understands the concept of functional pathology as overload of the musculoskeletal system
  • knows the relationships between functional segmental changes and the development of pathological conditions
  • is able, based on theoretical knowledge, to select an appropriate therapeutic approach to a musculoskeletal segment
Key topics
  1. Function of the locomotor system, medical history in relation to functional disorders, principles of examination of functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system
  2. Motor control, ontogenetic aspects and relationships
  3. Pain – pain in functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system, red flags
  4. Structural vs. functional pathology of the musculoskeletal system, etiology of functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system
  5. Overview of manual techniques, basic principles of manual therapy, facilitation
  6. Basics of diagnostics and therapy of functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system – skin and subcutaneous tissue
  7. Basics of diagnostics and therapy of functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system – fascia and periosteum
  8. Muscle and its functional anatomy, classification of muscles according to function, muscle dysbalances
  9. Basics of diagnostics and therapy of functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system – muscles
  10. Basics of diagnostics and therapy of functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system – enthesopathies
  11. Radicular and pseudoradicular syndromes – differential diagnosis
  12. Hypermobility – diagnostics, principles of manual therapy
