Abstract

The course introduces students to the significance of clinical biochemical examinations and their role in diagnosing, monitoring, and assessing a patient’s health status. It focuses on factors influencing laboratory test results, including the pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical phases, the importance of biological variability, and the principles of interpreting laboratory findings, including the evaluation of diagnostic effectiveness.

The course also provides a detailed overview of selected clinical biochemical tests, particularly those relevant to disorders of carbohydrate metabolism, liver and cardiovascular diseases, kidney function assessment, and the analysis of urine and cerebrospinal fluid.

Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
  • explain the significance and principles of clinical biochemical examinations, their execution, and the factors influencing laboratory results;
  • characterize the importance of biological variability and apply it when interpreting laboratory data and assessing the diagnostic effectiveness of tests;
  • describe and interpret major biochemical investigations in disorders of carbohydrate metabolism, liver diseases, and cardiovascular conditions;
  • describe and evaluate biochemical tests of kidney function, acid–base balance, as well as urine and cerebrospinal fluid analyses;
  • apply knowledge of laboratory parameters when solving model clinical situations.
