Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to provide students with sufficient understanding of all the topics and related language devices. Students will expand their ability to differentiate between formal and informal communication and enhance their knowledge of cultural and historical traditions as means to create a feeling of fellowship with our community. They will gain basic knowledge of the relationship between language, social communication and orientation, and will be able to modify these observations for teaching students according to their particular language and cultural specifics.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student will: - have basic understanding of the relationship between the Czech national language and culture and its functioning in various communication situations; - gain knowledge anout key moments in development of Czech culture, language, geography and history.
Syllabus
  • 1.–2. Regular close connection of topics with language (mostly lexicology, phraseology and learning a basic set of proper nouns), cultural, historical, and regional devices. 3.–5. Landscape, types of settlements, cities, urbanization of the countryside. Protection of the landscape. With regard to comparison of language and culture. 6.–7. Social contact, norms of behaviour, structure of family and relations; use of appropriate language devices. 8.–10. Public administration, structure of politics, transport, shopping. If required, highlighting regional language differences. 11.–12. Incorporation of aspects of Czech and (central) European environments.

Teaching methods
Lectures are followed by a discussion about current issues in the field.
Assessment methods
To successfully complete the course the students need to: 1. study the recommended literature; 2. hand in a written assignment/presentation on the topic: the Czech republic in central Europe – location, landscape, historical development, current state; Czech language in social communication. Detailed requirements are disclosed in IS in Studijní materiály (materials for study), in each semester when the subject is taught.
