Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to explain the cultural and social changes of Brno in the inter-war era. Notably the twenties represent a singular important era of the city s modern history. The seminar aims to outline the rise of cultural qualities of Czech Brno in the broadest spectrum (urbanism, building and architectonic activities, housing interiors creation, events on the field of literature, theatre, fine art and music along with the cocial life of the city).
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, the student will be able to explain the cultural and social transformations of Brno during the inter-war period. Especially the 1920s represent an unusually significant period of modern city history.
Syllabus
  • 1) The character of Brno of the beginning o the twentieth century. Essays by Arne Novak called: Duše Brna a jeho kultura slovesná (The soul of Brno and its literary culture). 2) Urbanistic development of Brno between 1848-1918. 3) Brno regulation urbanistic competitions between 1924, 1927 and 1933. 4) Architecture of Brno in the twenties and thirties. 5) City housing interiors creation - "UP závody", magazine "Bytová kultura". 6) City s fine art associations - "Maehrischer Kunstverein", "Vereinigung der deutschen bildender Kuenstler Maehrens und Schlesiens" , ""Klub výtvarných umělců Aleš", "Skupina výtvarných umělců". 7) Literary associations in Brno - "Moravské kolo spisovatelů", "Literární skupina", "Literarische Gesellschaft". 8) City s Czech and German theatres. 9) The Masaryk University: its foundation, individual faculties formation, activities. 10) Czechoslovakia 1928 - contemporary culture exhibition.
