Course objectives
The students win a basic competence in the syntax of contemporary Czech language syntax.
(a) the ability to explain syntactical terms;
(b) the ability to use theoretical knowledge when analysing the sentence, complex and compound sentence;
(c) using the ability of sentential analysis when teaching in the primary school.
Learning outcomes
In the end of the course students:
(a) are able to explain the semantics and communicative function of the sentencial utterance in context;
(b) are able to explain cardinal function of the basic syntactic constituents, especially of predicate.
(c) master analysis of the sentence, complex sentence and compound sentence, are able to interprete the sentential constituents and to find mistakes in the sentential structure (bad wordorder, disruption of the relations among sentential constituents;
(d) are able to analyse compound sentences and complex sentences and to draw the graphs depicting their structures.
Syllabus
  • Full-time study:
  • 1. Modality of the sentence. Indicative, interrogative, imperative and optative sentence. Types of questions.
  • 2. The structure of the sentence. Sentential constituents. Predicate, the role of predicate in the sentential structure.
  • 3. Expressing of subject by word classes. Grammatical concordance of predicate and subject.
  • 4. The sentences with subject and non-subjective sentences.
  • 5. Object, attribute, verbal attribute/complement, adverbials. Expressing of them by word classes.
  • 6. Graphical scheme of the structure of sentence. Punktuation. The Meaning of the sentence and punktuation.
  • 7. The Rules of the word order in Czech. Deficiency of word orther and some other deficiency in the sentential structure.
  • 8. Sentence, complex sentence and compound sentence. Compound sentence. Co-ordination and expression of the coordinative relationships.
  • 9. Complex sentence. Sub-ordination. Types of subordinated clauses (subjective, objective, attributive, complementive).
  • 10. Adverb clauses and types of them.
  • 11. Compound sentence with the complicated structure (with co-ordination and sub-ordination). Complex sentence with the complicated structure. Graphical scheme of the compound sentence and of complex sentence.
  • 12. Punctuation in the compound sentence and in the complex sentence. Compound and complex sentence with embedded clauses.
  • Combination of full-time study and distance learning (twice two-hours seminary in semester)

Full-time study:
- Controlled dialogue on problems of terminology
- Problem methods, methods of the critical thinking (brainstorming, "map" of train of though...)
- Text analysis, analysis of sentence, compound and combined sentence
- Study hours
- Testing of practical knowledge by individual written tasks.
Combination of full-time study and distance learning (twice two-hours seminary in semester)

Assessment methods
Written examination: the themen of it examination are included in syllabus.
The written examination includes 52-60 elementary syntactical questions. To be succesfull the student has to answer 70 % of the elementary questions correctly.

Teacher's information
The students that are going to study abroad are not obliged to visit the seminaries. They are allowed to write the written examination after coming back from abroad. It is recommended to contact the teacher before leaving Czech Republic.
