- Course objectives
- The course mission is to develop students' receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing) language skills and to enhance their grammar and vocabulary knowledge at level B2 by means of academic topics relating to the sphere of special needs education. At the end of the course, students can succesfully participate in a spoken interaction dealing with issues relating to special needs education, use selected SNE terminology with natural and sophisticated control, and show a good command of selected grammar structures. They can understand both written and spoken academic texts at level B2, and can write a Master's thesis abstract plus literature review.

- SNE topics/issues: Intellectual disabilities. Specific learning difficulties. Autism spectrum disorders. Behavioural disorders (ADHD, ODD and CD). Mental health. Current cure methods. Career opportunities for special teachers/special educators. Academic skills: Academic writing - writing a thesis abstract + literature review; writing a CV + cover letter. Grammar/general vocabulary development: conditionals; articles; countable and uncountable nouns; some, any, no…; reported speech; sentence transformations III; prepositional phrases; transitional expressions; phrasal verbs.

- Teaching methods
- Weekly ninety-minute seminars designed for teaching English for specific and academic purposes (activities developing language skills and grammar/vocabulary knowledge at level B2: listening and reading tasks, grammar and vocabulary practice, pair/group/class discussions and other kinds of speaking activities, collaborative writing, providing peer-feedback, etc.).
- Assessment methods
- Credit requirements: 1) Attendance (only two classes can be missed), completed in-term tasks/home preparation for classes, active participation in classes; 2) Submitted writing assignments: Master's thesis abstract + literature review of Master's thesis sources in English (must be submitted prior to the oral part of the exam); 3) Exam: 2 parts: A) written (parts: listening, reading comprehension, use of English, writing, SNE terminology); level B2. Total: 70 marks; PASS MARK = 65 % B) Oral – A) monologue + B) spoken interaction between two students. Total: 30 marks; PASS MARK = 65 % In order to be allowed to sit the final exam, students must complete all in-term assignments and meet all deadlines. The oral part of the exam can be taken only by students who have passed the written part. Ústní část zkoušky mohou absolvovat výhradně ti studenti, kteří splní její písemnou část.

General note: Výuka probíhá v angličtině. Kurz je ukončen písemnou a ústní zkouškou na úrovni B2.
