Course objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to: -- solve model examples from genetics of eukaryonts -- solve model examples from genetics of populations -- create and analyse a human karyotype -- identify and specify types of the most frequent chromosomal aberrations -- explain mechanisms of emergence of chromosomal and genome mutations.
Syllabus
  • 1. Revision of knowledge gained during learning genetics in high school. 2. Basic genetic terminology – exercises on a magnetic board. 3. Eukaryotic chromosomes structure – I. video. 4. Eukaryotic chromosomes structure - II. microscopic sections of male and female chromosomes. 5. Chromosome aberration at man: video, microscopic sections of chromosome aberrations. 6. Assembling of karyotypes and their evaluation. 7. Mendel’s laws – I. model examples of AD and AR heredity. 8. Mendel’s laws – II. model examples of GR and GD heredity, deviations from Mendel’s rules, genetic interactions. 9. Genetic bond, strength of the bond, principles of chromosome maps construction. 10. Population genetics: numerical exercises, examples of fixation and displacement of alleles – mutation and selective pressure. 11. Genealogy – examples. 12. Coefficient of affinity, dangers of inbreeding – examples. 13. Heredity of quantitative attributes of man – examples.

Teaching methods
During practical seminars the examples from genetics of eukaryonts and genetics of populations will be analysed. From a given genetic material every student defines normal and pathological human (female and male) karyotype. The seminar will be supported by video programmes from geneticcounselling offices and prenatal offices, especially from centres for assistive reproduction.
Assessment methods
Credit. Solution of Model Example Concerning Human Inherited AttributesFrom a list of 60 examples a student selects two, he has to solve them and explain the method of their solution. Afterwards he/she defends results of the examples in a discussion.
