Course objectives
The course provides overview of the development of children’s and youth literature as a part of the national literature. It outlines the development of the Czech literature since its beginnings until the 1990s, with deeper insight into selected periods of literary development. Students will familiarize with main milestones of the development of youth literature in the wider context of changes to national literature and culture.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the students will be able to explain the basic tendencies and changes of the intentional children’s and youth literature since its beginnings until the 1990’s in the context of the development of the national literature. They will gain deeper understanding of selected topics regarding the history of Czech literature as well as the wider context of literature and art.
Syllabus
  • 1. Development, concepts and periodization of Czech literature. 2. Older Czech literature in context of development of European literature, specificities of Czech literature, the scope and theme of studying older Czech literature for teachers of 1st stage of elementary school. 3. Humanism, renaissance, baroque. 4. Main issues of the Czech cultural and scientific development during the period of national revival, main phases of development, important figures, beginnings of youth literature. 5. The relationship of folklore and the artificial culture, adaptive activities. 6. The characteristics of Czech literature during the 2nd half of the 19th century, important authors. 7. The situation at the turn of the century, development of the publishing business (focus on youth literature). 8. The specifics of Czech literature during the interwar period (genre changes). 9. The development of Czech literature during the occupation and during 1945-1948. 10. Literature, literary science and journalism during the 1950’s and 60’s. 11. Literature, literary science and journalism during the 1970’s and 80’s. 12. Changes to literature during the 1990’s.
