Course objectives
By the end of this course, the students will be able to orientate in basic academic literature, textbook series, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and descriptions of individual levels of language skills. Special attention will be given to teaching Czech language to students with a Slavic mother tongue. Students will test their knowledge of topics and terminology not only while reading academic articles and discussing current issues in didactics, but also by doing a demo lesson.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the students will be able to: 1. to define the basic concepts necessary for the study of the Czech language with a focus on the teaching of pupils with a Slavic and non-Slavic mother tongue; 2. they will be able to characterize those phenomena that are difficult for pupils with a different mother tongue to understand and understand the Czech language; 3. orientate in basic professional literature, textbook series and other aids; 4. control the latest methods and use them in lessons. Practical knowledge will also be verified at the training lesson.

  • 1. Introduction to the field, teaching Czech as a foreign/second language to students with a Slavic mother tongue; 2.–3. Language and sociocultural similarities and differences; 4. Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, representative descriptions of Czech as a foreign language; 5. Bilingualism, diglossia, sociocultural competences; 6. Teaching Czech language to students with a Slavic mother tongue; 7. Teaching Czech language to students with a non-Slavic mother tongue 8. Integration of students with a different mother tongue into the lesson; cultural framework, taboo, traditions; 9. Principles of didactics; 10. Methods of education; 11. Textbooks, methodology handbooks, didactic tools; 12. Practical lesson and its principles, demo lessons.

Assessment methods
To successfully complete the course the students need to: 1. read the recommended literature; 2. do a demo lesson showing teaching of given grammar issue to students with a Slavic and non-Slavic mother tongue.
