- Course objectives
- Czech Language Syntax 2 follows the Czech Language Syntax 1; the analysis of the compound sentence follows the analysis of the sentence.
The targets:
1. Establishment of the theoretical knowledge of the structure and semantics of the compound and complex sentences.
2. Establishment of the ability to depict the structure of the compound and complex sentence, to explain the relationship of them and the types of clauses.
3. Development of the ability to compare structure of various types of the compound and combined sentences and to explain the parallel of the structure of the elementary sentence, compound and complex sentences. - Learning outcomes
- It is pressupossed the students after finishing the course are able:
1. to explain the differences between th main and subordinate clauses and knowing the terms elements of sentence and subordinate clauses to know the types of subordinate clauses
2. to analyse compound sentences and complex sentence, to differ the types of the clauses in compound and complex centences;
3. to identify the relationships among the clauses in all types of compound and complex sentences;
4. to interpret relationships among sentences in the text. - Syllabus
- 1. Criteria for the differentiation between a sentence, a complex sentence and a compound sentence.
- 2. Sentences in the compound sentence. The connectives (word category, syntactical function, meaning).
- 3. The sentence and the clause in the complex sentence.
- 4. Types of the compound sentence.
- 5. Co-ordination in the compound sentence. Types of the semantic function of the co-ordination, the connective of the co-ordination. The co-ordination of the sentences and of clauses.
- 6. The subordination in the complex sentence.
- 7. The classification of the subordinated clauses. Connective words in subordinated clauses. Relationships of the contents of the head-clause and the subordinated clauses.
- 8. The classification of the subordinated clauses: clause in the valence position of the predicative verb in the sentence - head-clause.
- 9. The Compound sentence and the complex sentence with complicated structure.
- 10. The Graphical scheme of the compound sentence and complex sentence.
- 11. Some irregularities in the structure of the sentence.
- 12. A functional perspective of the sentence. The word-order.

- - Textual analysis oriented to semantic relationships among sentences.
- Analysis of compound and complex sentence, discussion on special problems; problem methods connected with methods of critical thinking.
- Controlled discussion oriented to elimination of mistakes. - Assessment methods
- Credit requirements: Written test that includes theme of the subject (see syllabus).
The test includes 50-60 elementary questions focused to complex and compound sentence. To be successful student has to answer 75 % of them correctly. - Language of instruction
