Course objectives
The learning outcomes are the transfer of basic information from the field of pedagogy of the visually impaired with an emphasis on counseling and support for the independent life of blind and partially sighted people. Students will gain knowledge about the impact of visual impairment on quality of life, education system, special aids, counseling and intervention.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able after the course:
- to understand the specific manifestations and effects of visual impairment on a person's personality and its development
- able to classify visual impairment from different perspectives
- Present the possibilities of counseling and education for persons with visual impairment in the Czech Republic
- master the basics of guiding a visually impaired person
- recommend basic special tools to handle the everyday life of a person with weakened vision and a of the blind
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic terminology - defining the field of education and support of visually impaired and its position in a multidisciplinary approach.
  • 2. Physiology of the vision process. Development of visual perception. Basic examination of visual functions.
  • 3. Basic pathology of vision in childhood and adulthood.
  • 4. Basic special aids for the visually impaired and the blind, focusing on age, degree of disability.
  • 5. Early care - the theoretical basis of early care, forms and services. Centers and their clientele.
  • 6. Personality of a person with visual impairment (specifics of perception, thinking, attention, behavior, speech). Psychomotor development of a visually impaired child.
  • 7. Visually impaired child at pre-school age (pre-school education of the sight of the affected child, child with disturbed binocular vision and reeducation of these defects).
  • 8. The system of education of pupils with visual impairment in the Czech Republic. Education of visually impaired pupils. Braille.
  • 9. Multiple disability - occurance and specifics with visual impairment. Deafblindness.
  • 10. Counseling and Intervention: service providers, service specifications.
  • 11. Communicating with people with visual impairment. Basics of Guidance. Mobility. Major mistakes.
