Course objectives
The one-semester course will focus on current issues of music culture in contemporary society with a link to the historical and social context. It offers an insight into the relationship between classical and popular music with an emphasis on aesthetic and axiological aspects, issues of musical interpretation and musical reception. Attention will also be paid to music in relation to new media and mass culture.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student:
– will be able to orientate in the issues of contemporary music production with emphasis on its historical development
— will demonstrate his/her ability to understand the semantic characteristics of a musical work
- will be acquainted with the current musical preferences of his/her peers
- will be capable of critical thinking and value orientation in the field of mass music culture

  • 1. The relationship between musical postmodernism and the avant-garde – contexts of history and the present
  • 2. Musical preferences of university youth in the light of sociological research
  • 3. The relationship of classical, jazz, popular and folk music – to the overlaps of musical styles and genres
  • 4. Blues as a basic mode of modern popular music
  • 5. Folklore inspiration in Czech classical music
  • 6. Music and performer – to interpretive approaches to music of older stylistic periods
  • 7. Meaningful aspects of music as a starting point for musical understanding or Let's not be afraid of semiotics
  • 8. Music and kitsch – about the boundaries of taste
  • 9. Film music and soundtrack – phenomena of today
  • 10. Commercial use of music or Music in advertising
  • 11. Music and media – technology of sound recording and its reproduction
  • 12. Humor in music as one of the expressive means of postmodernism
