Course objectives
The students will learn about the basic factors affecting the health of an individual and the population. The students will be knowledgeable about the types of physical activity that support healthy child development, health promoting programmes and health education opportunities in kindergarten.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the students will be able to interpret and use the basic knowledge of the theory of physical education and health education; they will understand the principles, methods and forms of work applied in contemporary physical activity and health education designed for preschool children.
Syllabus
  • Theory: 1. Health – concept, definition, history. Society and health, public health, health promotion programmes (Health 2020). Factors influencing health (risk and protective factors), healthy lifestyle. 2. Educational areas Child and child’s body, Child and the other person – partial educational objectives, educational offer, expected outcomes and possible risks to the achievement of educational objectives. 3. Nutrition and health, nutritional recommendations, children’s nutritional behaviour. 4. Physical activity and health. Health promoting physical activity, health-oriented fitness. Physical activity in healthy children and children with health disability. 5. Basic didactic principles of physical education and health education of small children and children with disability 6. Prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases in kindergarten. 7. Issue of obesity – types, etiology, epidemiology, prevention. 8. Significance of games and enjoyable activities in physical education and health education of preschool children. Injuries and injury prevention. 9. Prevention of addictions. Smoking, alcohol and addictive behaviour. 10. Principles of sex education of preschool children, CAN syndrome. 11. Health education in kindergarten (objectives, content and methods of health education). Health promotion programmes and projects in kindergarten. 12. Physical education and health education – everyday activities of a kindergarten teacher. Summary. Practice: Basic concepts related to movement games and the equipment used, basic rules and organizational guidelines for the implementation of games suitable for preschool age. Movement games and preparatory exercises for the development of movement skills, games for manipulating equipment, competitive, creative and sensory games, games for improving movement skills as part of individual thematic units, emphasising the educational use of games (sense of fair play). Safety in games, with a focus on appropriate clothing and footwear, especially when playing in more difficult conditions. Injury prevention. Mastery of basic movement skills in connection with spatial orientation, overcoming obstacles, control of equipment, movement in groups of children, movement in different environments and on different surfaces. Summarizing the curriculum, meeting credit requirements.

Teaching methods
Regular classes. Theoretical preparation, commented presentation, discussion on the topic. Verbal, demonstrative and practical methods.
Assessment methods
Theory: active participation in the classroom. Didactic test. Practice: Active participation in teaching. Demonstration of the organisation of games on a given topic; written preparation of a methodological output.
