Course objectives
This course continues the courses - Geographic Information Systems and Cartography. Main aim is to learn basis of the atlas creation, principles of map’s creation and to learn main issues of the thematic cartography. At the end of the semester, students should be able to design a conception of their own atlases, to elaborate them and present.

  • Getting to know about Czech and foreign atlases; emphasis on the school atlases
  • The function of atlases in teaching Geography
  • To learn the Czech and foreign atlases, with an emphasis on the school atlases
  • Atlases published on the web sites
  • Description of the chosen atlas
  • Comparison of different conceptions of atlas and deduction of its usage
  • Independent work
  • Design of the own conception of atlas, project Atlas at school

Assessment methods
Credit; the lessons take place in the GIS Laboratory. To complete this course successfully, it is necessary to elaborate the concept for an atlas, including the commentary of its practical usage in teaching geography at primary and secondary schools; to elaborate an essay on topic: Geography Plan with a Maximum Work with Atlases.
