Course objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to define and explain the basic concepts of morphological analysis (e.g., morpheme, paradigm, word form etc.); they are able to identify the internal structure of inflected or derived words and to distinguish between both types (inflection vs. derivation); they become aware of the different possibilities of arranging German nouns into inflectional classes and are able to compare and evaluate the different approaches; they are able to name the grammatical categories relevant in the nominal domain and can demonstrate their relevance for different nominal parts of speech.
Syllabus
  • - The content of morphology, the place of morphology among the linguistic disciplines;
  • - Basic concepts in morphology: morpheme, (allo)morphe; root, stem, affix; lexeme, paradigm, word form;
  • - Grammatical categories and their realization within the word form; grammatical markers; affixes and morphological processes;
  • - Inflectional classes of the German noun;
  • - The possibility of plural formation and its dependence on the semantic class of the noun (count nouns, mass nouns; common nouns, names);
  • - Are there inflectional classes with German adjectives?
  • - Inflection and derivation;
  • - Definiteness as grammatical category: Where should it be located within the grammar?
  • - Semantic, syntactic and morphological definitions of the parts of speech;

Assessment methods
The present course of lectures in morphology belongs to the facultative part of the curriculum. Its content is, however, part of the written test at the end of the morphological seminar in the spring term. A minimum of 70% of the overall amount of points is required to pass the test.
