Course objectives
Having met the course requirements, students have broad knowledge of the development of the most important genres in literature for children and young adults. Students are able to evaluate contemporary literary production for children and young adults, both books and magazines. They will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies.
Syllabus
  • Literature for youth from the point of view of literary genres: 1. Magazines for children and youth. The development of children ´s magazines, outline of currently published magazines, analysis and comparison of individual titles. 2. Folk literature and its place in children´s reading. A detailed genre characteristics, authors of adapted versions and collectors. 3. Poetry for children and youth, new authors in the contemporary poetry, particularities of so-called sung poetry. 4. Authorial tales. Varied kinds of authorial tales in the contemporary literature, authorial adapted versions of folk tales, both domestic and foreign. 5. Epic prose with a child hero. Terminology, topical issues, problems of utilitarism. 6. Adventure literature for youth. Specificity of Czech adventure literature, outline of writers. 7. Prose with a female child hero. Changes of genres in the course of the 20th century, convention v. originality, variety of the contemporary prose with a female child protagonist. 8. Prose dealing with historical issues. Terminology, historical prose in the context of literature for youth, prevailing topics. 9. Prose dealing with nature and wildlife. Overlapping of more genres, significant authors and works.

Teaching methods
Type of course: seminar. Students prepare their own mini-lectures for which they select literary works in order to illustrate a genre development.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: active participation in seminars (short presentations of assigned literary works related to the seminar topics).
