Course objectives
At the end of the course the students should be able to explain the problems of the past and the present of European integration.
Syllabus
  • A. Integration concepts: 1919-1939. Coudenhove-Kalergi, Pan-European Union. "United States of Europe" concepts (Briand’s proposals, Herriot’s project). Integration projects by organizations (The League of Nations, International Associations Union. The Association for European Understanding. The International Association for European Cooperation). The "United States of European Nations" project. Regional federation proposals. Intellectuals and Pan-Europe. B. European concepts during WW II. German concepts and projects. Projects by British politicians. Pan-European union projects. Projects by exile governments and European resistance movements. Regional federation attempts. C. New integration movements and organizations (1945-1969). Western European integration trends. European union of federalists. The European Parliamentary Union. New international teams. Socialist movements in the United States of Europe. Projects by Monnet. The Schuman Plan. The ECSC. The EEC. Euratom. De Gaulle and European integration. The "empty chair" policy and the Luxembourg Compromise. D. Expanding integration (1969-1989). The European projects: The Tindemans Report, The European Act (Genscher-Colombo), The Carrington Report, The Spinelli Committee. Delors and integration concepts. E. The 3rd integration phase: The European Union (1989-2000). Post-1989 integration projects (modifying NATO strategies. Expanding CSCE. New forms of regional co-operation. Shaping the political union.) Eurooptimists, Eurosceptics and Eurorealists discussing the character of the EU’s political system, Europeisation, social model, international relations, and further enlargement.
