Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to explicate the significance of environmental education, deepen the students’ knowledge and skills in the area of ecology and didactics of ecology education, to increase their knowledge about current issues, and to explain how the environment affect human health and how the current lifestyle affects the environment. Another aim is to provide practical suggestions and inspiration for the teaching process, and to provide space for the students to present their opinions and specific educational approaches.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the students will: Understand the significance of environmental education, Be able to present their own opinions and provide effective arguments, Be able to define current global environmental issues, Be able to identify their causes and propose solutions, Understand the significance and status of environmental education in elementary schools, Be able to revise their own value system, Be able to apply the knowledge and skills in practical life.
Syllabus
  • 1. Significance and possibilities of environmental protection in the Czech Republic and EU; 2. Environmental information, right to environmental information; 3. Nature and landscape protection in the Czech Republic and EU; 4. Selected global environmental issues; 5. Home ecology in everyday life of the family and school; 6. Status of environmental education in elementary schools, education in nature and a school garden, environmental residential courses; 7. Environmental education in the family and in extracurricular activities, eating habits; 8. Effectiveness of environmental function of the school, space for improvement; 9. Environmental courses as part of elementary school education; 10. Value orientation and environmentally friendly human activities; 11. Steps to responsible consumption, greenwashing; 12. Medicinal plants and their rediscovered importance, garden therapy. Syllabus of seminars: 1. Activities of Lipka environmental centre – excursion; 2. - 12. Individual seminar paper on food safety, presentation of the paper.

Teaching methods
Series of lectures and discussions on various environmental issues, work on a seminar assignment.
Assessment methods
Students shall present and defend a seminar paper on a selected topic.
