Course objectives
The students will get acquainted with the conception of appellative spheres and proprial - language spheres of proper nouns / names and basic terminology associated with propria - proper nouns / names (e.g. propria - proper nouns / names, types of propria of proper nouns / names; language spheres of propria - proper nouns / names, meaning of propria - proper nouns / names), with the conception of onomastics, and appellative patterns. The attention focuses on toponomy and anthroponomy, classification of surnames / second names and typology of motivation for selecting Christian / first names. In the end of the course students will be able to explain motivation (parentage, origin) of types of proper names and to classify proper names accordance to various criteria and to put the knowlege to use in the Czech language teaching in school.
After finishing the course:
- student takes his bearings in the onomastic theory and onomastic terminology;
- student masters classification of the proper nouns;
- student takes his bearings in the toponymy and anthroponymy.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student will: - have general knowledge of the systemics and functional features of the proprietary sphere of the language and the role of proper nouns in language and social communication; - be able to independently present the subject matter of proper nouns.

  • 1 Appellative spheres and language spheres of propria of proper nouns / names.
  • 2 Meaning of propria of proper nouns / names, object of propria of proper nouns / names.
  • 3 Appellative process of propria of proper nouns / names, a pattern of propria - proper nouns/names, type.
  • 4 Classification of onomastics.
  • 5 Relationship of place names and history of the language, history of the culture, colonisation.
  • 6 Anthroponomastics, types of anthroponyms, the so-called living names.
  • 7 Social and cultural conditionality of a Christian/first name selection.
