Course objectives
The aim of the course is to present a mosaic of pragmalinguistic topics with emphasis on persuasiveness and manipulativeness and a mosaic of sociolinguistic topics with emphasis on usage of vocabulary in social groups. Students are supposed to understand a placement of marginal scientific disciplines in linguistics, to understand specifics of their methodology and be able to work out a study on a particular topic.
Learning outcomes
To prepare and hand in a study on a topical issue of marginal scientific disciplines with emphasis on pragmalinguistics and sociolinguistics.
Syllabus
  • 1. Marginal scientific disciplines in the context of development of linguistics.
  • 2. Pragmatics/pragmalinguistics. Context, support of pragmatics. Theory of intention and conversational implicatures (H. P. Grice), postulates / communicate maxims / conversation. Theory of speech acts, model of a speech act (J. L. Austin), typology of speech acts, indirect speech acts. Theory of a communication function of a statement. Cognitive theory of pragmatics.
  • 3. Analysis of talk. Discourse analysis a) Conversation analysis, local and global organization of talk. b) Intelligibility of a text. Persuasion. Manipulation. Persuasive techniques, argumentation, stereotypes.
  • 4. Sociolinguistics. Stratification sociolinguistics/macrosociolinguistics. Language variability. Standard language. Social group.
  • 5. Functioning of vocabulary in a social group. Language politics and language culture.
  • 6. Empirical research. Interactive sociolinguistics/microsociolinguistics. Language communication as accommodation-assimilation activity.

Teaching methods
Seminar. Discussion on the mentioned topics on the basis of special literature and considering the dissertation topic.

Credit requirement: to work out an expert study on one of the offered topics that will be announced at the beginning of a semester.
