- Course objectives
- 1. In the lexicology the students study the structure of Czech vocabulary.
2. The word forming presupposes knowledge of the basic terminology and methods of formation.
3. The students develop their ability to analyse word from semantics and word-forming point of view. - Learning outcomes
- In the end of the course the students will be able to:
(a) find synonyms or antonyms for specified word, distinguish homonyms and polysemous words;
(b) explain the meaning of some strange words (almost archaism);
(c) identify phrases or other multiverbal lexical units;
(d) make analysis of word-formation (foundation word, word-forming base of word, formant);
(e) make analysis of word-building (the root, prefixed part, suffixed part of the word). - Syllabus
- 1. Fundamental terminology of the lexicology and word formation in the Czech language.
- a) Word and names. Types of names: words, phraseologism, groups of words.
- b) Semantic relations in the vocabulary. Synonyms, its function in the texts. Antonyms, the types of antonyms. Hyponyms, hyperonyms.
- 2. Word-formation and word-building in Czech language. Fundamental terminology.
- a) Motivated and non-motivated words.
- b) Types of word-formation in Czech language: derivation, composition, abbreviation.
- c) Word-forming stem; the word-formation by suffixes and prefixes.
- d) Analysis of the words from word-formative point of view.
- 3. Morphemic analysis of word structure. Analysis of word-building.

- Teaching methods
- 1. Drawing of basic terminology - working in the groups.
2, Analysis of word-forming structure - common and individual work.
3. Complex word-building analysis - deduction and conclusion from special examples. - Assessment methods
- Credit requirements: student have to master written examination of the vocabulary and word-formation and word-building.
The written examination consists of two parts: it includes 30 short questions of language phenomena in text of lexicology and 20 short questions of word-forming. To be successfull student has to solve 70 % of the questions correctly. - Language of instruction
