Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to monetary development in the Czech lands from the establishment of the Czech state up until the period of the modern monetary systems of the 20th century. The course focuses on the major monetary reforms throughout the course of the history of money, types of commodity money and specific means of payment. There is a particular focus on written sources for the history of money and interpreting monetary data in contemporary texts, and special attention is devoted to accounting and monetary units and their designation in written sources. The objective is to provide a basic orientation in the history of money in the Czech lands in relation to archive sources.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- describe the main monetary periods in the history of the Czech lands;
- be conversant with monetary and accounting units in the Czech lands;
- describe monetary reforms in the history of money;
- distinguish minted money from accounting units;
- identify and analyse abbreviations of monetary and accounting units in historical texts.

  • • A monetary overview of the Czech lands in the period of the thaler currency.
  • • Conventional currency and the first banknotes.
  • • Austrian currency and the Austro-Hungarian crown currency.
  • • The Czechoslovak crown currency.
  • • Monetary institutions.
  • • Monetary reforms and bankruptcies in the course of the monetary development of the Czech lands.
  • • Accounting and monetary units and their designation in written sources in the Middle Ages and modern period.
  • • Interpreting monetary data in historical texts.
  • • Problems associated with studying prices and wages.

Assessment will take the form of a written test consisting of two parts: 1. A test of theoretical knowledge of the subject; 2. The transcription of a short text.
