- The course introduces students to the basics of phonetics and phonology. Students should be able to use the basic concepts when analyzing Czech data.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, the student is able to:
- classify vocalic and consonantal sounds in Czech according to their phonetic features;
- use IPA alphabet;
- understand distinction between sounds and phonemes;
- formulate and encode basic phonological rules (e.g. final devoicing);
- formulate basic principles of syllabification and define basic syllable types. - Syllabus
- 1. Phonetic properties of consonants and vowels in Czech.
- 2. Phonetic transcription (IPA).
- 3. Complementary vs. paralel distribution of sounds, minimal pairs, phoneme – allophone.
- 4. Classes of phonemes: distinctive features, phonemic alternations, phonemic oppositions.
- 5. Phonological rules, syllabification.
