Course objectives
The course introduces students to the basics of phonetics and phonology. Students should be able to use the basic concepts when analyzing Czech data.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student is able to:
- classify vocalic and consonantal sounds in Czech according to their phonetic features;
- use IPA alphabet;
- understand distinction between sounds and phonemes;
- formulate and encode basic phonological rules (e.g. final devoicing);
- formulate basic principles of syllabification and define basic syllable types.
Syllabus
  • 1. Phonetic properties of consonants and vowels in Czech.
  • 2. Phonetic transcription (IPA).
  • 3. Complementary vs. paralel distribution of sounds, minimal pairs, phoneme – allophone.
  • 4. Classes of phonemes: distinctive features, phonemic alternations, phonemic oppositions.
  • 5. Phonological rules, syllabification.
