- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide an elementary introduction to the linguistic characteristics of the Czech language and to offer practical training in handling problematic linguistic phenomena. Students will become familiar with the fundamental codification handbooks of standard Czech and with online linguistic tools (such as the Internetová jazyková příručka provided by the Institute of the Czech Language of the Czech Academy of Sciences).
Each class session focuses on the explanation and intensive practice of a specific problematic area. The course includes e-learning support. - Learning outcomes
- Having participated in the course, students will be able:
- provide a basic characterization of the historical development and stratification of the Czech language;
- use fundamental linguistic terminology appropriately;
- navigate the codification of standard Czech and consult relevant contemporary reference works;
- identify and explain problematic linguistic phenomena (orthographic, morphological, syntactic);
- apply the acquired knowledge in practical text composition. - Syllabus
- 1. Fundamental developmental trends and the current linguistic situation in the Czech Republic.
- 2. Stratification of the Czech language.
- 3. Theory of standard language (usage, norm, codification).
- 4. Care and regulation of standard Czech (institutions, reference works, online resources).
- 5. Orthography of i/y and í/ý in word roots and endings.
- 6. Orthography of prepositions s, z and prefixes s- (se-), z- (ze-); writing of consonant clusters.
- 7. Issues in Czech punctuation.
- 8. Specifics of capitalization.
- 9. Abbreviations and symbols.
- 10. Spelling of loanwords.
- 11. Final review and consolidation.

- Teaching methods
- Tutor’s explanations of theory, practical exercises relating to partial problematic features – a combination of inductive and deductive methods, presentations of authentic language materials (from the Czech National Corpus and from printed as well as electronic periodicals), using internet tools (f.e. Internetová jazyková příručka).
