Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to popular prints from the period 1500-1800, popular genres, their specifics and their literary, social and historical context. Special attention will be paid to the intertextuality that is typical of popular culture.
Learning outcomes
The student - understands the concepts of popular culture and popular prints, can list their characteristic features. - can work with sources in databases (Vokabulář webový, Melodiarium, THB, Špalíček, Manuscriptorium). - is able to describe the materiality of popular printings. - can compare Old Czech texts, their motifs, literary devices and function, can look for intertextual connections.

  • 1. Introduction. Definition of the term, genres, context, sources and sources 2. Excursions in MZK 3. The beginnings of printed news: "Turkish newspapers" 4. "News" on disasters 5. Songs of Simon Lomnický from Budeč 6. Aesop, Grobian, Fortunatus, Enspígl, Markolt, etc. 7. The image of women Czech chapbooks: Grizelda, Jenovéfa, Meluzína 8. Satires on women: The Mandate and the Rule of Women, Furnace for old women 9. Reflection on Hussitism: Historia about the inhabitants and martyrs of Litoměřice 10. Drama: Peasant Carnival 11. Superstitious printings 12. Pilgrimage chapbooks 13. Workshop at the MZM 14. Presentation of student projects
