Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the cultural history of transcultural and multilingual Brno and its surroundings. The focus of the seminar will be on stories reflecting on personalities, places and events associated with Brno as a landscape of memory in a regional cultural-historical, sociolinguistic and literary perspective across the centuries.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- summarize basic knowledge about Brno and its surroundings as a place of cultural memory;
- describe the linguistic specifics of Brno speech;
- name the most common stereotypes and mythical stories associated with Brno;
- capture the basic features of Czech-German, Jewish, Roma, industrial, functionalist, sporting, poetic, pilgrimage and musical Brno;
- to orient oneself in the literary and cultural personalities associated with Brno as a place of memory.

  • Brno legends - from the city and its surroundings.
  • The linguistic landscape of Brno.Brno of forests, waters and hillsides.
  • Brno functionalist and Brno industrial.
  • Brno the musical.
  • Brno of pilgrimage.
  • Brno Roma not only from the Museum of Roma Culture.
  • Project week (intensive teaching in the form of workshops reflecting the above topics and the creation of collective project outputs).

The course is implemented within the BIP project with the participation of foreign students. At least 2 sessions will be held online, on 21.3. and 18.4. from 17.30 on Zoom. The course will end with an intensive training week in Brno in the second half of April.

The course will end with a creative group project involving 1 to 3 participants. Practice tests on the topics discussed will be available in ELF during the semester (video recordings in ELF). Each student will be required to participate in at least 4 mock tests in e-learning during the semester with a pass rate of at least 50%. There will be 4 attempts to pass the test within 25 minutes per attempt. The tests will be open until April 26, 2024.

Successful completion of the course requires:

Participation in the online sessions;

4 practice tests in ELF with a 50% pass rate;

participation in the classes and activities of the intensive week in April from April 22 to April 26;

completion of a group project.
