Course objectives
The seminar will focus on reading and interpreting Sumerian and Akkadian literature. The students in cooperation with the teacher will work both with Czech and English translations of cuneiform texts. In the seminar, the students will be introduced with the most important literary texts of Sumerian and Akkadian literature and their culturally historical background (e. g. the Epic of Gilgamesh, Innana's Descent to the Nether World, the Creation myths). The myths shall be viewed from historical, religionistic, anthropological and also analytically psychological view. The topics are subject to change.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course the student is
- capable of conducting an historical interpretation of translated sources for the ancient Near Eastern history
- able to explain correctly the terms included in sources, especially those that pertain to political, military, social and religious life of relevant ancient societies
- able to successfully use written Ancient Oriental sources in seminary, M.A. and other kind of theses
