Course objectives
Rome has always held an attraction as one of worlds great cultural, religious and intellectual centres. The course focuses on art writings, monuments of art and architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries as they reflect the historical events, the ideological currents and the meaning Rome held for its contemporaries. At the end of course student should be able to work with local informations in the whole of the history of baroque art in Europe, but he can also reconstruct the baroque view of town in modern Rome.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- analyze art and architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries;
- actively work with contemporary literature;
- use local information to interpret more general artistic trends;
- to reconstruct the historical form of the modern city and to present it.

  • 1. The Literature of vite-type in the baroque Rome.
  • 2. Rome around 1600 - Trials of Beatrice Cenci and Giordano Bruno.
  • 3. The Urban development and the buildings activity in the times of Sixtus V. and Paul V.
  • 4. The Age of Barberini.
  • 5. Innocent X.: Festivities, spectacles and architecture under the patronage of Pamphilj-family.
  • 6. Alexandr VII. Chigi, Bernini and Queen Christine of Sweden.
  • 7. The Academia degli Arcadi, Accademia di San Luca: Science and culture on the trash of new century.
  • 8. Concorsi Clementini and European baroque architecture.
  • 9. Rome as a center and crossroad of the national cultures.
  • 10. The Culture of Enlightenment in Rome.
  • 11. Vasi, Nolli, Piranesi and the vedutes of Rome.

Teaching methods
Homework, presentations, class discussion.
Assessment methods
During the semester homework is required (reading, analysis of texts) and its presentation in the form of papers, the obligation to attend classes and participate in discussions, preparation of the final paper.
