Course objectives
The lecturer comes out from several years of ethnological field research on the territory of the Balkans - Bulgaria, Republic of Macedonia, Serbia which was realized mainly in the rural area. The cycle of lectures will give students an insight into the everyday culture, the great emphasis is putted on the current research of traditional culture with the prism of ethnology as a science of everyday culture, taking into account all-Balkan specifics.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, the student will be able to: navigate research on everyday life in ethnology and related disciplines; understand both traditional and contemporary culture in selected Balkan countries; comprehend certain specifics of the development of traditional folk culture/everyday life culture in the Balkans; define phenomena of traditional folk culture that are typical for Balkan countries; navigate current social processes; define major and minor groups living in the Balkans; and understand the ethnic and religious issues of this part of Europe.
Syllabus
  • Definition of the Balkans and its boundaries - historical, geographical, political, cultural, and metaphorical. Stereotypical perception of the Balkans, us and them. The Balkans as an ethnological field - outlining research issues. Everyday life culture in the Balkans, specifics of traditional folk culture in comparison with Central Europe. Ethnic and national identity, nationalism - through microcase studies (Macedonians, Serbs, Albanians). Ethnic and religious relations (a brief overview of ethnic conflicts). Everyday life of ethnic minorities in the Balkans (microcase studies on the lives of Slavic Muslims, Roma/Gypsy groups, and Turks in Bulgaria). Economic and migration strategies, traditional and contemporary livelihoods, models of labor migration - possibilities for ethnological research on one of the most important social phenomena in the region and its cultural dimension.
