Abstract

The course centers on the main events of European development from the Migration of Nations until the end of the Middle Ages. Focusing on the most important phenomena of Western and Eastern medieval history, the aim is to understand the primary causes of different development in both regions in terms of politics, religion, society and culture.

Learning outcomes

The students will acquire a comprehensive knowledge of medieval European history and will be able to:
- characterise the main problems and phenomena
– define the role of the Byzantine Empire in European medieval history
– analyse the basic causes of the different development in Western and Eastern Europe
- describe the role of Christianity in the history of medieval Europe
- characterise the circumstances of the emergence of nation states
- define the causes and consequences of the crisis of the Late Middle Ages

Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements

The students pass the course based on active in-class participation, written test and oral examination covering Czech and general medieval history (book list; knowledge of broader historical context, basic questions and the state of research).
