Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the issue of pious women in late Byzantium as presented in contemporary sources. Together we will look at the issue of lay piety, piety in the context of women's monasteries, we will examine pious donors and the issue of spiritual fathers in women's monasteries.
Learning outcomes
After the conclusion of the seminar students will be able to -describe the main features of women's piety in the late Middle Ages -name the main reasons why women entered the monastery in this period -understand the basic principles of monastic typika -describe the Byzantine ecclesiastical history of this period and the main ecclesiastical-political problems that marked this period

  • Female piety in late Byzantium 1. Introduction 2. Stories of lay women I: empresses, noblewomen and Byzantine princesses married outside the home 3. Stories of lay women II: common women and wives of priests 4. Life in and out of a nunnery 5. Stories under the veil: nuns and abbesses 6. At peace with God and his Church: converts, penitents and miraculous healings 7. Holy women of late Byzantium 8. To offer a dwelling to God, his saints and brides: women donors and foundresses 9. Defying emperor, pope and patriarch: late Byzantine women and the politics of the Church 10. To read, write and paint their faith: the scholarship and devotional works of late Byzantine women 11. Byzantine women and their spiritual fathers 12. Final test
