- Course objectives
- The course - which is very intensive, four lessons per week - aims to provide the basic elements of the language to allow students to communicate, make requests, ask for and give information at an elementary level of the language in informal and formal situations. Furthermore, it intends to provide and develop strategies to understand and communicate through the intercomprehension of languages already known.
- Learning outcomes
- The students will learn to communicate in Italian on a basic/elementary level: they will be able to introduce themselves, ask/answer to questions about their personal life and everyday activities. They will be able to read and to write simple texts. Language level at the end of the course: A1+.
- Syllabus
- Topics: 1) personal information, 2) Family, personal description, 3) interests and free time, 4) daily activities, 5) eating habits, 6) personalities and stories 7) city, 8) fashion and style. Grammar structures: regular nouns and adjectives, definite and indefinite articles, there is / there are, present tense of regular and irregular verbs, past tense (passato prossimo), imperative, personal pronouns, prepositions, adverbs (never, always etc.). Lessons are mainly based on the communicative approach. Programme activities, i.e., lectures that are common to the whole programme, are also to be included in the course content. On these occasions, other activities (including regular classes) will be suspended. Matteo Di Figlia (University of Palermo), Seminars on ‘Il fascismo italiano: 1919-1943’ (Teaching materials will be provided prior to the seminars) The full calendar of activities will be communicated at the beginning of the semester.

- Teaching methods
- This is an intensive course of Italian language - four lessons per week are offered. The teaching/learning approach is communicative so that active attendance is expected. Activity in ELF is not mandatory; nonetheless, it is highly recommended because it is considered as part of the course. Attendance is mandatory (70% at least). More details will be given during the first week of the semester.
- Assessment methods
- The exam consists of two written parts: 1)skills section (listening, reading, writing); 2) grammar and vocabulary knowledge section. In order to pass the exam, a minimum score must be achieved in both parts.
