Course objectives
Introductory course to the Italian literary tradition through the reading of selected excerpts from the major Italian writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Students will be guided in learning the overall framework of Italian literature, its major authors and trends, placed within their literary and historical context.
Learning outcomes
The course aims to familiarise students with Italian literary history through the reading of a selection of texts and works produced in the 19th and 20th centuries. Students will be accompanied in the study of the foundations of philology and stylistic analysis and in the acquisition of the skills necessary to investigate literary texts on a micro- and macro-textual level. textual level.
Syllabus
  • Main topics covered in the course: - Foscolo, Leopardi, Manzoni; - Porta, Belli; - La Scapigliatura; - Verga; - Carducci, Pascoli, D'Annunzio. The students will be accompanied in the reading of an anthological selection of works belonging to the authors and movements mentioned above. Each reading will serve as an introduction to the study of the poetics of the writer and literary movements of the 19th and early 20th century.

Teaching methods
The course will be held in Italian. Students will be guided in the reading of the literary pieces. Students will receive weekly assignments and are expected to actively participate in the class discussions. Students are suggested to attend the seminars taught by visiting professors.
Assessment methods
Attendance (80%) and active participation in class discussions. The examination will be written and oral. Oral examination on all topics studied in the course and written examination on a topic decided upon in advance with the lecturer.
