Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the basics of Italian phonetics and phonology (phonetic and phonological system of contemporary Italian, spelling and segmental and suprasegmental aspects such as syllabification, stress and intonation). The second part of the course will be devoted to the description of the origin of Italian and its development, with some knowledge of sociolinguistic characteristics.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to define the basic concepts of phonetics and phonology, describe the phonological system of the Italian language, apply the acquired knowledge in practice and will also know how to navigate the basic stages of the development of the Italian language history.
Syllabus
Basics of Italian phonetics and phonology. Vocalic and consonantal system of contemporary Italian. Segmental and suprasegmental aspects: syllabification, accent, intonation. Introduction to the origin and formation of the Italian language. Programme activities, i.e., lectures that are common to the whole programme, are also to be included in the course content. On these occasions, other activities (including regular classes) will be suspended. Activities already on the calendar: - 30.09 (all day, room 343) and 01.10 (morning, dean's meeting room, to be confirmed) Conference "Developing new languages in migration contexts - 13 October 16:00-18:00 and Tuesday 14 October 16:00-18:00 (dean's meeting room), prof. Matteo Di Figlia (University of Palermo), Seminars on ‘Il fascismo italiano: 1919-1943’ (Teaching materials will be provided prior to the seminars) The full calendar of activities will be communicated at the beginning of the semester.

Teaching methods
Lectures (Explanation of basic problems and their exemplification on different types of specific examples), discussions, independent reading, seminar exercises.
Assessment methods
During the course: Attendance of at least 80% and active participation in class. Exam: Written test (practical and theoretical parts — each part must be passed with at least 50%; the overall score must be at least 65% to pass). If it is not possible to meet the 80% attendance requirement, it is necessary to arrange in advance with the instructor the study of additional materials to compensate for the missed classes.
