Course objectives
Students will be introduced to the discipline, its methods and analytical tools through which, in subsequent courses, the structures of Italian will be discussed according to the different levels of linguistic analysis (phonology, morphology and morphosyntax). The remaining part of the course will be devoted to the description of the origins of Italian and its development, with some insights into sociolinguistic characteristics.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will have fully mastered the appropriate technical terminology and will be able to navigate their way through the levels of linguistic analysis and its categories. They will also be able to orient themselves through the fundamental phases of the development of Italian and its internal sociolinguistic articulation.

  • Introduction to Italian linguistics, tools and categories of analysis, levels of analysis. Glossary of Italian linguistics (technical vocabulary). Introduction to the origin and formation of Italian Italian today (repertories, varieties and linguistic space).
