- The course follows the course Introduction to librarianship. It aims to explain in detail the functioning of key processes and services in libraries. The course focuses on applying theoretical knowledge to practice and therefore it is being done in our experimental library (Brno, Křížová 88). Several excursions to the various libraries in Brno will take place in the course. It is important for students to better understand their functioning. Due to the practical orientation, the course is suitable especially for students of the daily form of study who lack practical experience in libraries.
- Learning outcomes
- After the course, the student will:
- understand the specifics of various types of libraries
- be able to think about services and processes in libraries
- be able to use statistics to make libraries more efficient
- be able to design and implement a simple project in the library - Syllabus
- Content:
- 1) basic libraries and their function
- 2) specialized libraries and their function
- 3) acquisition (acquisition options, approaches, book market)
- 4) cataloging (cataloging standards, approaches, shared cataloging
- 5) library system management (functions of the library system, commercial library systems, and opensource library systems)
- 6) digitization of library collections (scanning, OCR, postprocessing, the organization of digital collections, access to digital documents, legislation)
- 7) loan services (organization of loan services, legislation) 8) information and retrieval services (searching, retrieval, text reduction, citations, document retrieval from external resources, reprographic services)
- 9) cultural and educational events in libraries (the educational function of libraries, readership and information literacy, publishing in libraries)
- 10) library marketing (basic principles of library marketing, target groups, content marketing, social networks, library advocacy, evidence-based librarianship)
