Abstract
Title of the course: Languages and communities in Japan
During the course we will exmanine the multilingual linguistic sceneary and the different cultural communities of Japan. The students will be introduced to the language/speech communities in Japan (focus will be on the indigenous languages and their varieties), and how the relation of culture and language shape their exsistence and language life. During different case studies, project-intorductions they will learn how to desing their own community based research, the different methods of fieldwork, the ethic background of working with community members (and handling their data), and the limitation of researches of this nature.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course the students will understand the different theories and definition of multilingualism and multiculturalism.

· They will understand the multimodality of linguistic identity.

· They will understand the role of multilingualism, translingualism in the wellbeing of a society.

Competencies an attitudes

· The students will learn how to critically examine texts, theories, methodologies and fieldwork documents/publications.

· They learn how to analize linguistic life and surroundings, and recognize the linguistic problems in accordance or in contrast to the language policies.

· They learn how to design their own community based research.

· They will exame their own assumptions on language and community in Japan
