Course objectives
The aim of this course is to describe and critically evaluate the main milestones and stages of Bosnian history from the Middle Ages till today. Bosnia (Bosnia and Hercegovina) will be presented as a "laboratory" of complicated inner multi-ethnic and multi-confessional relations and at the same time as a country many times in history lying on the crossroads of outer power interests.
Learning outcomes
By absolving this course, students will extend their knowledge about general (European) history, will be able to better understand coexistence of different ethnics and confessions in the Balkans, will understand inner laws ("philosophy") of preserving Bosnia and Hercegovina as an integral state in current borders, will be able to understand complicated political situation in the current state of Bosnia and Hercegovina and at the same time will be able to think about the future perspectives.
Syllabus
  • 1. Discussions about the character of Bosnian history, based on different approaches (Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian discourse).
  • 2. Bosnia in the Middle Ages, question of Bosnian statehood, problem of the so-called Bosnian church.
  • 3. Bosnia in Ottoman Empire, Islamization of great part of the local people, relations between confessions.
  • 4. Bosnia and Hercegovina under the Habsburg Monarchy, process of modernization of the society, so-called europeanisation of Bosnian Muslims.
  • 5. Area of Bosnia during the Yugoslav Monarchy and the Second World War.
  • 6. Bosnia and Hercegovina as a republic in Yugoslav Socialist Federation, finalization of the formation of modern nation of Bosnian (Yugoslav) Muslims.
  • 7. Bosnia and Hercegovina during the state crisis and dissolution of communist Yugoslavia.
  • 8. Curse and evaluation of the civil war in Bosnia and Hercegovina (1992 - 1995).
  • 9. Main problems of Bosnia and Hercegovina after Dayton.
  • 10. Deciding inner and outer factors and limits of current Bosnian statehood, possible perspectives of future political development.

Teaching methods
This course combines lectures and seminary part. Students will prepare a short paper on given topic for the seminaries. There will also be a discussion about the paper.
Assessment methods
Prerequisites for granting the credit: Regular attendance on lectures, preparation and presentation of a paper, active participation in seminaries, proving good knowledge at the oral exam.
