Basic knowledge of the Roman art and material culture. Completion of the course KLA_001 - Introduction to Classical Archaeology or AEB_A01 – Introduction to archaeology is obligatory, completion of the courses KLA_012 or AEB_A07c is convenient.

Course objectives
The course will familiarize the students with development of Roman toreutics. The lectures will provide knowledge of metal vessels. Attention will be paid to find contexts in the Roman Empire and in the Barbaricum, stylistic analysis of ornaments, and function of vessels. After completion of the course, the students will be familiarized with basics of typology and significance of metal vessels in Roman and barbarian societies.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, students will be able to:
- describe, characterise and fundamentally interpret the Roman metal vessels
- have a good understanding of production and decoration of metal vessels, organization of their production and distribution
- define the significance of metal vessels in Roman and barbarian societies
Syllabus
  • 1. History of research and methodical pitfalls concerning the study of Roman metal vessels.
  • 2. Find contexts in the Roman Empire.
  • 3. Find contexts in the Barbaricum.
  • 4. Bronze-brass vessels of the Late Republic and Early Principate (2nd half of 1st century BC to 1st half of 1st century AD) – typology, ornament, functions.
  • 5. Silver vessels of the Late Republic and Early Principate – (2nd half of 1st century BC to 1st half of 1st century AD) – typology, ornament, functions.
  • 6. Bronze-brass vessels of the 2nd half of 1st century AD to mid-2nd century – typology, ornament, functions.
  • 7. Silver vessels of the 2nd half of 1st century AD to mid-2nd century – typology, ornament, functions.
  • 8. Specific features of development in the Middle Roman Period – the royal tomb of Mušov.
  • 9. The problem of hoards of metal vessels on the Limes.
  • 10. Bronze-brass vessels of the 3rd and 4th centuries AD – typology, ornament, functions.
  • 11. Silver vessels of the 3rd and 4th centuries AD – typology, ornament, functions.
  • 12. The phenomenon of inheritance of metal vessels in barbarian regions. Roman manufacturing traditions in the Migration Period and Early Middle Ages.
