Course objectives
The goal of this course is to introduce students to the development of the 20c Chinese ptg, with the emphasis on Western influences. At the end of the semester, students will gain basic understanding of the problém, and should be able to critically judge modern Chinese paintings.

  • 2. Lingnan School; Jupéon, Liu haisu
  • 3. masters of ink ptg: Qi Baishi, Huang Binhong, Zhang Daqian, Pan Tianshou
  • 4. woodcuts in service of the sociál and war propaganda
  • 5. painting consciousness: Feng Zikai and Jiang Zhaohe
  • 6. “xieyi“ / Li Keran and others
  • 7. ideological pressure in the 1950s: Fu Baoshi, Lin Fengmian
  • 8. arts during the Cultural revolution
  • 9. katarsis after the CR: Xingxing, the New Vawe 85, China-Avantgarde etc
  • 10. the inovation of the literáti ptg
  • 12. cynical realism, pop-art etc.
