Course objectives
To know the substance of the notions "world literature" and "world literatures", world literary canon, various conceptions of world literature, to acquire the general knowledge of the development of world literature of our civilizational sphere due to individual stages of cultural development, to have an idea of the whole of world literature and to know its basic facts.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the doctoral student will be able to understand various conceptions of the notions "world literature" and "world literatures", to know the major stages of the development of world literature due to cultural epochs, to know the dominant poetological tendences, currents, genres, and styles, to know the world literary canon and its modifications and the basic facts, to have the compulsory reading completed, partly in foreign languages.

  • 1) Comparative literary studies and the conception of world literature and world literatures 2) Outline of ancient literatures (ancient Egypt, literature of Mesopotamia starting from Sumer, India, China, Japan, Tibet; in case of East and South of Asia to demonstrate their development in the Middle Ages) 3) Ancient literature in Greece and Rome 4) European medieval literature 5) The Renaissance-Humanist-Reformation Epoch 6) Baroque and Rococo 7) European Neoclassicism 8) The Crisis of Neoclassicism, Pre-Romanticism, Sentimentalism,and Romanticism 9) The 19th-century Realism 10) Neo-Romanticism and Modernism 11) Avantgarde tendencies in the 20th century 12) Neo-Realism in the 20th century and its relations to Modernism and Avantgarde 13) Postmodernism 14) The contemporary state of world literature 15) A selected subject from national literatures
