Knowledge of one Romance language (Italian/Spanish/French/Catalan/Portuguese) at least at A2/B1 level is assumed. Not suitable for first-year students.

Course objectives
In this language workshop, we will deal with texts of varying length and difficulty in 5 Romance languages: Italian, Spanish, French, Catalan, Portuguese. The aim of the course is to encourage students with a good knowledge of one Romance language to understand the texts of other Romance languages on the basis of their comparison and thus to simplify language orientation in the Mediterranean area. Due to the fact that students with knowledge of different languages participate in the seminar, the teaching is interactive not only between the lecturer and students, but above all between students. The basic teaching material is the EuRom5 textbook with texts in 5 Romance languages including their audio versions and a comparative grammar and lexical overview.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- apply his/her knowledge of one Romance language to texts in other Romance languages;
- understand and interpret in his/her own words the text of another Romance language without the need to complete the standard teaching of this language;
- compare basic grammar and vocabulary in several Romance languages;
Syllabus
  • Introduction (development of Romance languages in the Mediterranean area, comparative linguistic method);
  • Selection of texts: working with the EuRom5 textbook (reading and listening);
  • Reading and collective or group discussion of texts (mostly newspaper articles from online periodicals of individual countries)

Teaching methods
Class discussion, group projects, presentation.
Assessment methods
Final team work: understanding the assigned text. Obligation to attend classes at least 70%.

This course is primarily intended for students of Mediterranean studies from the 2nd year of the bachelor's cycle and for master's students. It can also be taken by other students with knowledge of one Romance language at the A2/B1 level (students of the Institute of Romance Languages and Literatures, etc.) after an exemption has been granted.
