- Course objectives
- This course provides an overview of the major literary developments in prose, poetry and drama in the Arab world from the beginnings of the Nahda (the period of cultural renaissance in the Arab world) until the present day. The emphasis will be given to the cultural processes of Arab Renaissance and its impact on the formation of national literatures in Arab countries. The course will focus on a number of important modern Arab writers from Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine as well as from North African countries, with some attention given to women writers. Students will familiarize themselves with the selected works in Slovak or Czech translation.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon the completion of the course, students will have acquired competence in:
- situating major works of Arabic literature in their cultural and socio-historical context;
- reading, analysis and interpretation of major works of modern Arabic literature (poetry and prose);
- presenting their own analysis in oral and written form and in a concise academic style through class discussion and final essay. - Syllabus
