Course objectives
A brief outline of the history of Polish literature from its beginnings in the 10th century till the end of World War I, emphasizing the development of its nodal points and the most important authors and the characteristic texts of various genres.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student will:
- be able to understand the developmental patterns of Polish literary and cultural history before 1918,
- acquire knowledge of several epochs of the development of Polish literature,
- deepen his skill to analyse and interpret a literary text.
Syllabus
  • 1. Middle Ages. The origins of Polish literature. Religious orders and their contribution to cultural development in Poland. Polish medieval historiography, hagiography, and rhetoric. Religious poetry. The Bible and the development of the Polish language. Secular literature.
  • 2. Renaissance. Outline of the cultural history of the period. Poetry of the Early Renaissance poetry. The beginnings of narrative prose. The work of Mikołaj Rej. Rhetorical prose. The work of Jan Kochanowski. The beginnings of the Polish drama. Poetry of the Late Renaissance.P> 3. Baroque. Introduction to Baroque culture and characteristic forms of Baroque literature. Conceptism and marinism. Sarmat authors. Plebeian creation. Late Baroque.
  • 4. Age of Enlightenment. Periodization of the Polish Enlightenment. Saxon period. Stanislavian Age. Classicism and major cultural institutions. Sentimentalism. Work of important Enlightenment authors (Adam Naruszewicz, Ignacy Krasicki, Stanislaw Trembecki, Franciszek Karpinski, Franciszek Dionizy Kniaźnin). Rococo. Enlightenment Theatre and Drama. Jan Potocki and heritage of the Polish Enlightenment. Literary work before the November uprising.
  • 5. Romanticism. Specifics and the center of Polish romanticism. Ukrainian school of Romantics. Life and work of a great romantic authors: Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Slowacki, Zygmunt Krasińského and Cyprian Kamil Norwid. Domestic literature and censorship. Aleksander Fredro and romantic theater.
  • 6. Positivism. The issue of marking period. Controversy with romanticism. The era of realistic novel: Eliza Orzeszkowa, Bolesław Prus, Henryk Sienkiewicz. Naturalism in Poland. The position of poetry in the period of Positivism.
  • 7. Mloda Polska. Dynamics and tendencies of the Polish modernism.

Teaching methods
Lectures and discussions about texts. Compulsory home reading (short fragments for each seminar, 6 complete books for final exam).
Assessment methods
Final written test. An active participation and one PPT presentation (excl. minor in Polish studies) are required.
Grading scale – exam: final test 50 % and oral exam 50 % (A 100–90 pts, B 89–85 pts, C 84–75 pts, D 74–70 pts, E 69–60 pts, F 59–0 pts). Grading scale – credit/no-credit course: oral exam 50 pts (pass 50–30 pts, fail 29–0 pts).
