První semestr je věnován charakteristice předmětu, cíle a metod diplomatiky a jejímu postavení mezi ostatními pomocnými vědami historickými, dějinám diplomatiky jako vědecké disciplíny (především diplomatické medievistiky) a základním diplomatickým pojmům.
